The stages of your journey in detail
Bangkok: Bustling beauty
Bangkok really is a city of experiences and contrasts, where so many exotic flavours come together. As people from all over the world settle in this bustling Southeast Asian capital, you get a diverse culinary experience that reflects exactly that. There's so much life on the streets of Bangkok that you'll see mega malls next to 200-year-old village houses. Try everything from regional Thai dishes to fusion food from around the world – but don't forget the street vendors! You don't have to spend a fortune on a good meal.
Make your way to the Grand Palace, a building that lives up to its name. A pearly white exterior hides priceless relics from the public eye – unless you pay the entrance fee. Soaring spires and truly impressive temples await you throughout the grounds. Within the palace walls stands Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. As you step inside, you'll be greeted by a small emerald and gold Buddha wearing a cloak that the King changes with every season.
Another great place to visit is the Patpong Night Market, the most notorious of all the night markets. Although it's surrounded by go-go bars and strip clubs, you'll also find a wealth of other goods and souvenirs here. And because we at RailwayHero love trains, we recommend a visit to the Maeklong Railway Market. What makes this market special is that it sits right on the railway line. When the train's horn sounds, the vendors quickly pack up and step aside while the train squeezes through.

Penang: A mixed history
Georgetown has blended three ancient cultures into an irresistible urban cocktail. Penang is considered one of the most appealing cities in the world, because here you'll find Chinese temples in Little India, mosques in Chinatown and Western skyscrapers towering over architecture from the British Raj era. A truly eclectic jumble of cultures that makes for a unique city.
Georgetown is often called the street art epicentre of Asia … and for good reason. Even without looking, you're bound to spot some in a little alleyway or on the side of a building, but it's worth completing the whole treasure hunt. It's known as the Penang Street Art Scavenger Hunt, and official maps have been made and printed so you can follow it. Pick up a copy at your hotel or hostel – or, if they don't have one, pop into another place to stay, where they'll surely point you in the right direction.
You'll get a wonderful view of the city if you take the funicular up Penang Hill or climb it on foot. Afterwards, you can satisfy your appetite at a hawker centre, a food court with street vendors. There are plenty of them in Georgetown and the choice of food is remarkable. Penang is famous for its Asam Laksa, but Malaysia in general is known for its cuisine. Tuck into some Nasi Lemak, devour Roti Canai or stuff yourself with Mee Goreng. We promise you won't be disappointed.

Kuala Lumpur: Dynamic living
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's beautiful capital, is a real feast for the senses. On this Southeast Asia itinerary you'll find not only historic moments but also steel skyscrapers, lush parks and mega-sized shopping malls. There's a wonderful mix of cultures, balanced and connected with the modern world. There's plenty to see in this vibrant capital with its dynamic architecture.
Famous sights include the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers, but Merdeka Square is also well worth a visit. It's a great spot for history buffs, as it includes the Sultan Abdul Samad Building with a large field in front of it. This is where Malaya declared its independence from the colonial powers in 1957 and became what
Malaysia
is today.
And don't forget to drop by the city's many shopping centres, where you'll find your favourite shops, tasty restaurants and wonderful air conditioning.

Singapore: The melting pot
One of the best experiences is immersing yourself in the Gardens by the Bay, an impressive Supertree Grove with 18 vertical gardens, the tallest of which is almost 20 storeys high. If you come at night, you can catch a magical light show in the Supertree Grove set to an eclectic soundtrack.
During the day, though, you can stroll through the tropical gardens and into the Cloud Forest dome. If you're after a little adventure, you can climb above the jungle on the MacRitchie Treetop Walk. In the heart of the city, you can sip an iconic Singapore Sling at the Raffles Hotel. Play a round of poker at the Marina Sands Casino or queue up at a hawker stall that has won the title of cheapest Michelin-starred meal (approx. €1.30). In such a small city-state, it will dazzle you enough to keep you coming back again and again.
