The stages of your journey in detail
Darwin: a tropical paradise
Located in the north of Australia, Darwin is the only state or territory capital in Australia with a tropical climate. The city has a unique flair – almost like a small, rugged beach town – combined with a multicultural atmosphere and an impressive history.
About 80 kilometres off the coast of Darwin lie the Tiwi Islands, home to Aboriginal people who have lived in this area for over 7,000 years. Here you can learn more about the culture, the history and the thriving local art scene. After soaking up the rich history and culture, you might spot a sea turtle or an endangered bird – these islands are richer in wildlife than the mainland.
At the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory you can see some of the region’s finest artworks. Nature lovers should take a walk through the Darwin Botanic Gardens, with beautiful waterfalls and rich flora and fauna. After a day of sightseeing, Douglas Hot Springs is the perfect place to unwind in Darwin.
Alice Springs: the heart of the Outback
Alice Springs is a remote town in the Northern Territory, best known for the Red Centre, the country’s desert region. Your first stop should be the Alice Springs Desert Park, which is one-third botanic garden, one-third wildlife sanctuary and one-third museum. The park is divided into three different desert habitats: woodland, sand country and desert rivers.
Art lovers should check out the Alice Springs Art Trail. The desert of the Red Centre has always been closely tied to art. Along this trail you can admire Aboriginal artworks, jewellery and local crafts. The Araluen Cultural Precinct is another must-see attraction in Alice Springs. With the Museum of Central Australia, the Central Australian Aviation Museum and the Araluen Arts Centre, this precinct has lots of incredible sights to discover.
Adelaide: South Australia’s coastal capital
As South Australia’s cosmopolitan coastal capital, Adelaide is home to a wealth of museums, festivals and cultural attractions. Start with a visit to Rundle Hall, a first-class shopping centre with splendid architecture. After your shopping trip, grab a bite at the Adelaide Central Market, one of the largest fresh-produce markets in Australia.
Enjoy beautiful nature in the Adelaide Botanic Garden, which covers more than 51 hectares. If that’s not enough, you can visit the Himeji Garden, a peaceful Japanese garden that’s ideal for a picnic or birdwatching.
The National Wine Centre, next to the Botanic Garden, is ideal for wine connoisseurs. Here you can learn more about winemaking and taste over 120 wines. Adelaide has several first-class restaurants, one of them being the Allegra Dining Room. Enjoy a vegetarian dinner in beautiful, elegant surroundings – the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day.
