The stages of your journey in detail
Porto: The mystical port city
Porto, whose name means "port", is Portugal's second-largest city and is famous not only for its excellent port wine – Porto also has something mystical about it. What exactly that is can't really be explained.
With the beautiful Douro, the river on whose banks it lies, its magnificent bridges and its sights, Porto is an endlessly fascinating, life-loving city.
The oldest part of Porto is Ribeira, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and wonderful for an evening stroll. Here you'll find historic old buildings and enchanting, winding lanes.
Take two or even three days to see the city in all its beauty. The route via Lisbon to Albufeira starts at the historic São Bento station on Praça de Almeida Garrett. Near the station, which is richly decorated with colourful tiles, you'll also find Porto Cathedral, which is well worth a visit.
Lisbon: The breathtaking capital
The largest city in Portugal and at the same time one of the most charismatic capitals in Europe. It impresses with its mix of history and culture on the one hand and modern architecture and lifestyle on the other.
Lisbon, also called Lisboa, enchants its visitors with a wonderfully mild climate, colourful and cheerful festivals and a wealth of beautiful sights. The city was built on seven steep hills, so be sure to explore it on foot to see it in all its glory. (Pro tip: there are lifts dotted around the city that let you skip some of the steep streets.)
A great place to combine sightseeing with history is the Castelo de São Jorge. Built by the Moors, the castle was the royal seat for centuries and is one of the oldest buildings in Lisbon. From the Castelo de São Jorge you get a breathtaking view over the city.
To see all of Lisbon's sights, you should stay 2 to 3 days here too and experience fado music at night. The little yellow tram no. 28 takes you comfortably and at a leisurely pace on a great route through Lisbon. The nostalgic tram line opened in 1930 and is a cornerstone of the city.
Albufeira: Holiday hotspot on the Algarve
Albufeira is lively and full of energy. Once a fishing village, this beautiful coastal town with its copper- and cream-coloured cliffs in the Algarve region is now one of the most popular holiday destinations in Portugal.
Stunning sandy beaches, a lively nightlife district – Albufeira has everything you could wish for. The splendid marina, surrounded by candy-coloured houses and the beach promenade, is not only the starting point for dolphin watching and boat trips but is also still used by the old fishermen.
Albufeira is the perfect place to end your trip to Portugal. You'll find plenty of bars, restaurants and cafés, along with all kinds of leisure activities and entertainment. Make sure you try a Pastel de Nata, a custard tart you'll find in every bakery.
